Fort Worth again annexes land in Denton County, near Texas Motor Speedway

Fort Worth, known as the place where the West begins, plans to expand its presence further north by adding more land in Denton County.

On Sept. 17, the Fort Worth City Council is expected to consider annexing more than 9 acres to provide access to Dale Earnhardt Way near the Texas Motor Speedway. The site, a triangular area north of State Highway 114 and west of Interstate 35 West, is within Fort Worth’s extraterritorial jurisdiction.

A public hearing was held in the City Council on August 13, but no one commented on the proposed annexation. A second public hearing is scheduled for August 27. The annexation is one of several similar proposals for smaller parcels of land to be incorporated into the city.

On Dale Earnhardt Way, adjacent land that had previously been annexed to the city was developed for commercial use, said Natalie A. Foster, a spokeswoman for the city of Fort Worth.

“Development of the area, which includes the Texas Motor Speedway, has resulted in increased traffic along Dale Earnhardt Way,” she said. “After incorporation of the right-of-way, the road would be maintained to city standards.”

According to a staff report, the city expects to provide municipal services after incorporation into the 10th District. Alan Blaylock currently represents Fort Worth’s northern district.

“Many of the adjacent properties are already within the city limits of Fort Worth and urban development is currently underway in the surrounding area,” the report states. “Staff determined that post-incorporation, the city would be able to provide municipal services in accordance with state law without negatively impacting service delivery within the city.”

Over the past five years, Fort Worth has annexed more than 5,300 acres to the north, south and west, the vast majority of which were property-initiated annexations, Foster said.

Since 2019, the city has annexed a total of more than 77 acres.
