When Mitchell Pritchett long-running sitcom Modern FamilyJesse Tyler Ferguson, 48, has been a game-changer in the representation of gay men on screen. As IndieWire notes, his relationship with Cam (played by Eric Stonestreet) was “the first time a major network depicted a long-term, committed queer relationship—and with two of its main characters.”

And even though the show is over, Ferguson continues to advocate for LGBTQ rights. This month, he and his husband, Justin Mikita, have been busy promoting their short documentary. It’s okaywhich “explores how the LGBTQ community, transgender people and drag performers are dealing with the recent rise in hatred against them among conservatives,” Out of The magazine reports. So who is Tyler Ferguson’s husband of 11 years? Here’s everything you need to know about 38-year-old Justin Mikita.

In June 2020, the couple told Variety how they met after Mikita approached Ferguson at the gym to discuss his character Modern Family. Ferguson then tweeted Mikita to ask him out, but the younger man was in a relationship at the time. “I said, ‘To be perfectly frank, I’m in a relationship, but I’d love to go out for drinks with you as a friend,’ and (Jesse) said, ‘I have enough friends,’ which I liked.” Almost a year later, they met again, but this time Mikita was single. They dated for nearly two years before getting engaged in 2012 (People Magazine) and marrying in New York in July 2013.

He is a film and theater producer

Mikita is also a producer in theater, television and film, according to People. He was involved in the revival of the 1980s play Torch Song Trilogy in 2018 and musical of the 1940s Oklahoma! in 2019. His latest theatre project is Peeledwhich has finished its Broadway run and will soon go on tour in North America, London and Australia, according to the musical’s Instagram page. He also produced documentaries Welcome to Chechnya (2020) on LGBTQ activists in the Russian Republic; and Broadway Rising (2022), about the reopening of New York’s theater district after the pandemic.

He appeared in a music video for Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift’s The song “You Need to Calm Down” was a huge musical blow against online trolls and haters, and the accompanying music video backed that up with a number of LGBTQ stars – including Mikita and Ferguson. The two are seen in sky blue suits under a floral arch, while Swift and everyone from RuPaul to the cast of Queer Eye Celebrate being yourself.

He advocates for LGBTQ rights

Mikita served as director of development for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which helped restore marriage equality in California in June 2013. He also co-founded Pronoun.org, a nonprofit organization that sells limited-edition clothing and accessories in support of LGBTQ causes.

He survived cancer

At 14, Mikita was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. “One morning I woke up with a lump the size of half a melon in my throat,” Mikita said in an Instagram post in June. “And after six months of misdiagnosis, the doctors finally figured out what was wrong.” Fortunately, after a series of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, his disease went into remission. In a September 2019 essay on the website Movember, Mikita wrote that this grueling experience at a young age caused him to develop post-traumatic stress disorder.

He has two children with his husband

Ferguson and Mikita have two sons, four-year-old Beckett and one-year-old Sullivan, whom they had via surrogate. On the Daddyhood podcast in May, Mikita said he was proud of how different things are for his sons than they were 30 years ago.

“We saw a Taylor Swift concert (Recording) … and Beckett says, ‘I wish I had a nice dress.’ And I said, ‘OK, buddy, we can get you a nice dress – that’s fine.’ And that’s not even a gay thing,” Mikita said. “I was just really proud of the moment because I felt like the reaction to me would have been dismissive if I had said that as a kid. … It was just those moments where I’m reminded that we really are excellent parents, no matter what people say. We’re doing a great job.”
