Body cam footage shows deadly confrontation in HEB parking lot in San Marcos

Body camera footage shows the events that led to a San Marcos police officer shooting a 22-year-old man in April. Earlier this week, a grand jury declined to indict in the incident.

In a press conference on Friday morning, Police Chief Stan Standridge showed the bodycam footage and spoke about the shooting.

Officer Alcides “Alex” Ventura shot Malachi Williams in the parking lot of a HEB grocery store on April 11, 2024, Standridge said.

The incident began when police received a 911 call at 9:32 p.m. from two victims who reported being threatened with knives. The victims, who are related to each other, said an unknown man followed them out of a supermarket and raised the alarm.

At 10:35 p.m., Officer Ventura spotted Williams at the same convenience store. Body-worn camera footage shows Williams talking to police inside the store. When asked to put his hands behind his back, Williams responded, “I thought we were cool, bro,” and refused to comply.

Ventura pursued Williams on foot and twice unsuccessfully attempted to deploy his Taser. Standridge said Williams armed himself with two knives during the pursuit. Ventura then holstered his Taser and drew his gun.

The pursuit ended in the parking lot of HEB, where Ventura fired his weapon, striking Williams. Footage shows Williams collapsing, Ventura reporting gunshots and radioing for emergency services.

Standridge said the grand jury reviewed the evidence and concluded that Ventura’s actions were justified under Texas law.
